Although we are responsible for keeping the highway safe, clean and free from spillages; we are not responsible for general road cleaning.  Where spillages are of a hazardous nature, the local police and fire service may also be involved in the incident and road closures may be required.

Who is responsible for street cleaning and road sweeping?

Any cleansing issues (including leaves and debris on the road) are the responsibility of  the local Borough or District council

There is debris in the road causing a hazard

Please let us know by calling 0345 60 80 193  if there is dangerous debris on the highway.  The local Highway Steward will attend to assess the situation and depending on the debris will liaise directly with the Borough or District Council and work with them to make the road safe,

There is debris at the side of the road

If the debris is on the side of the road the responsibility of clearing it will be your local district or borough council.

There is an oil spillage on the road.
