Winter

Please see below information regarding our Winter Service.

What we do

  • When icy conditions are forecast we will grit primary routes first. This is around 42% of all the roads in East Sussex including all A and B roads and some C roads. You can view our gritting routes here
  • We inspect and fill all East Sussex County Council owned grit bins once a year, in the autumn
  • We provide a 24/7 gritting service. We schedule our gritters based on weather forecasts and road surface temperatures
  • Find out more information in our Service FAQs.

What you can do

Keep up-to-date

  • Check the weather forecast - you can check for weather warnings via the Met Office. You can also find winter advice from the Met Office here.
  • Check your route is clear and gritting decisions via @esccroads or local radio stations
  • Don't travel in poor conditions unless it's essential

Prepare your car before the winter comes

  • Check the tread of your tyres - find out more here
  • Check windscreen wipers and washers
  • Make sure you have de-icer and a scraper in your car - find out more on your car winter kit here

Be safe on the road

  • Reduce your speed
  • Charge your mobile phone before setting off
  • Keep water, food, a blanket and sturdy shoes in your car
  • Do not drive through flood water - it may be deeper than you think - find further advise on driving in winter here

What you can do to help

  • Report any hazards, fallen trees, or flooded roads to us
  • Clear the pavement of snow and ice outside your house carefully (and your neighbours!) to make it safer for everyone
  • Don't use hot water to melt ice on pavements! It will refreeze and be dangerous on the path
  • We do not have the resources to routinely grit footpaths or pavements. We encourage residents to refer to the “snow code” on the Met Office website when considering clearing ice or snow from pathways and drives.
  • You can find out more about grit bins in East Sussex and how to request a new one here.
